University Studies classes transfer

Transfer students who have, prior to initially entering ÑÇÖÞɫͼ State, completed reasonable communication and basic skills, science and mathematics, humanities and fine arts and social science courses for the same number of hours as required at ÑÇÖÞɫͼ State, will be credited with completion of the University Studies component of degree requirements. Any deficiencies at the time they first enroll at ÑÇÖÞɫͼ State must be fulfilled according to ÑÇÖÞɫͼ State regulations.

A complete listing of University Studies courses required for each degree ÑÇÖÞɫͼ can be located in Chapter 4 of the Undergraduate Bulletin.

Approved associate degree

A transfer student who has completed, as of May 1995 or later, an approved baccalaureate-oriented Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree at a Kentucky Community and Technical College System (K.C.T.C.S.) community college will

  1. be accepted with junior class standing and
  2. be considered to have completed the baccalaureate University Studies requirements.

However, additional University Studies courses may be needed if they are required for the student’s major and/or degree and an equivalent course has not been transferred.

Associate degrees completed before May 1995, and those earned at two-year institutions other than K.C.T.C.S. community colleges, will be reviewed by the Registrar’s Office. If the degree is determined to be baccalaureate-oriented and to have comparable content and credit hour criteria, the same benefits will be extended to those graduates.

Kentucky General Education Transfer Agreement

As of January 1996, a policy on general education transfer was established to facilitate transfer among the public colleges and universities in Kentucky. The Council on Post-secondary Education and the institutions have developed a general education core transfer component which reflects the distribution of disciplines included in university-wide lower division general education requirements for the baccalaureate degree.

Students that are "Fully Certified" are considered to have completed ÑÇÖÞɫͼ State's baccalaureate University Studies requirements. Additional University Studies courses will be required only if specific courses are being required for the student's major and an equivalent course has not been transferred. Also, the ÑÇÖÞɫͼ of Arts, the ÑÇÖÞɫͼ of Arts in Business and the ÑÇÖÞɫͼ of Music degrees require 12 hours of a foreign language. If the courses are not taken as part of the general education transfer block, they will be required at ÑÇÖÞɫͼ State.

To be "Fully Certified" a student must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 (4.0 scale) and have met each of the following criteria:

  • Completed at least 48 hours of general education courses;
  • Completed the 33 hour core transfer component.

The other two levels of certification are "Core Certified" and "Category Certified." Certification at either of these levels insures that your general education courses will transfer as part of ÑÇÖÞɫͼ State's University Studies requirements.

Baccalaureate ÑÇÖÞɫͼ transfer frameworks

The public colleges and universities in Kentucky have developed a 60-hour ÑÇÖÞɫͼ of study for every baccalaureate major offered at the participating institutions. This "framework" consists of 48 hours of general education coursework and 12 hours of major-specific coursework. Students who complete a framework may transfer the credit as a block to any participating university offering that major. The 60 hours will be accepted at the institution toward meeting degree requirements. The following is a list of participating schools.

Transfer frameworks

  • Eastern Kentucky University
  • Morehead State University
  • Northern Kentucky University
  • University of Louisville
  • K.C.T.C.S.
